Maestro Eve Queler conducts Wagner's grand scale early romantic opera, steeped in bel canto traditions. Rienzi, the popular representative of the people of the 12th century Rome, is caught off guard by the distraction of his sister Irene's love for Adriano, the son of his most formidable enemy. He is ultimately brought to ruin by his adversaries, the Patricians.
The cast features tenor Ian Storey in the title role, soprano Elisabete Matos as Irene and mezzo-soprano Geraldine Chauvet in her US debut as Adriano.
